Monday, April 22, 2002 ~ Only in Iowa

Last week was a fantastic week…sunny and warm. Boy what change we’re having…last week’s lows are this week’s highs. We actually had to run the heater at night in the hoophouse over the weekend. Fortunately, I haven’t noticed much damage in the garden and it sounds like the worst of the cold is over.

Last week was a pretty productive week. We spent some time cleaning up the garden…raking away leaves and dead foliage. Lots of stuff is up already…lilies of all types, many, many hostas, iris, peonies… The little baby bearded iris are starting to bloom, the lilacs and fruit trees are full of buds, the red bud is ready to burst open, and the tulips are displaying big, fat buds.

We got a large shipment of water plants last week and spent the majority of the week potting them. Most of them are now potted and recovering from the trauma of shipping. We’re waiting on a shipment of pots to finish up the few remaining plants.

Our Spring in the Country Open House is less than a week away, now!! Registrations are still coming in and we’re expecting an excellent turn out. Our main concern right now is the weather. As long as it doesn’t rain we can deal with it.

From now until the middle of June, life is going to be hectic. Every weekend in May is booked with a sale or show of some type, not to mention our regular customers who come to the shop. We start off the first weekend in May at the Indian Creek Nature Center plant sale. This will be the first time we’ve set up there, but from what we’ve been told we can expect a huge crowd.

Tuesday night (April 23) I am giving a hosta presentation to the Buchanan County Master Gardeners. The rest of the week will be spent tying up all the loose ends for our open house…see you then
